Sorry, your browser doesn't support Java. Synagro Campaign launched by SEIU

The Service Employees International Union (SEIU) is targeting the largest producer in the country, Synagro Technologies, as part of their private equity work. Synagro is owned by Carlyle Group, a DC-based PE firm. On 12/17/2007 SEIU launched this campaign with a press release, action and website (www.CarlyleExposed.org ) and have a campaign plan through the spring. In terms of demands, they will likely ask that Carlyle/Synagro adhere to a good neighbor policy with community stakeholders where plants are located.

But when it comes to Synagro and its products, communities stand to lose."

Press Release:

"Carlyle Group Sewer Sludge Business May Increase Health Risks to Communities"
, December 17, 2007.

SEIU calls on Carlyle to disclose information about potential health hazards to environmental groups, local govts that contract with Carlyle-owned Synagro Technologies.

People who live near the operations of a Carlyle Group sewer sludge business could be at an increased health risk if Carlyle does not provide information to those communities about toxins and other hazards associated with its business. Washington, DC-based Carlyle, a giant global buyout firm, owns Synagro Technologies, a company that processes municipal waste products, transports the resulting "sewer sludge," and distributes it for land application. Residents living near sites where sewer sludge has been applied have reported significant health complaints that they associate with the sludge application.
